A pipe coupling comprising a tubular body 1 of a plastic material; two sealing rings 2; two gripper rings 3 each having gripping ridges on the inner surface; an enclosure ring element 4 and means 5 for drawing inwards the enclosure ring element 4. Insertion of the pipe ends into the coupling is achieved with a minimum of resistance because of the clearance between the pipe and the gripping edges, and the loose fit between the pipe and the seals. When the enclosure ring element/enclosure ring segments 4 are drawn radially inwards the gripping edges are also deflected inwards so that they grip into the pipe surface. At the same time the tubular body 1 deforms inwards until the inner surface bears against the pipe outer surfaces and a fluid tight seal is formed by each sealing ring 2 within the confines of each groove in the tubular body and the outside of the pipe. <IMAGE> |
