A cigarette lighter is constructed as a ball shaped element (6) with an inner ball (11) supported on rollers. A roller switch (5) is built into the inner ball and is used to activate the gas supply valve (23) built into the tip. The pulse generated by actuation of the switch is received by electronic circuitry with energy supplied by a battery. Operation of the switch is provided by relative rotation of the two balls, with one (14) of the rollers providing engagement. The flame is extinguished by movement away from a sensor strip area (18,19). ADVANTAGE - Simple to operate, reliable ignition.
