Separating cleaning balls from the coolant water flow downstream of a tube heat exchanger uses vortex producing vanes above a sieve to entrain the cleaning balls. A vortex rotating parallel to the sieve surface and streaching into the sieve is given an axial velocity parallel to the sieve. This axial velocity is induced by a small flow of water from the centre of the sieve to carry the entrained cleaning balls into an outlet tube. The vortex producing vanes are moved relative to the sieve to remove cleaning material and larger impurities removed from the heat exchanger surfaces. USE/ADVANTAGE - Cleaning and descaling of heat exchangers. Inexpensive, simpler, equipment using less water flow and less associated pipework and pumping power.
