Polyarylene sulphide mixt. contg. substd. anthraquinone deriv. - having reduced radical formation upon UV exposure and improved mechanical properties

A mixt. of 99.9 - 90 wt.% polyarylene sulphides and 0.1 -10 wt.% anthraquinone derivs. of formula (I) in which R1, R2, R3 and R4 (same or different) = H or -S-R5 with the proviso that at least one of R4 to R4 = -S-R5 in which R5 = 1-22 C alkyl, 7 - 22C alkylaryl or 6-14 C aryl. USE/ADVANTAGE- The mixts. of polyarylene sulphide, eg PPS and (I) exhibit reduced radical formation and yellowing upon exposure to daylight and UV under atmospheric conditions, together with improved mechanical properties. The compsns. are useful for the prodn. of moulded articles, fibres and films. Typical (I) are 1,5-bis-(phenylthio)-anthraquinone (Ia) and 1,8-bis-(phenylthio)-anthraquinone (Ib). The compsn. may also contain 0.01 - 400, esp. 5-100 wt.% glass fibres or other additives such as carbon fibres, inorganic fillers, metal powders or pigments and 0.1 - 3 wt.% other assistants such as a bismaleimide of a diamine,e.g. the bismaleimide of methylenediamine.
