The packing device of the invention has a feed conveyor (1) located at an upper, feed, level (A) and a packing conveyor (2) located at a lower, packing, level (B) and driven to move at right angles to the feed conveyor (1). The two conveyors are linked by a bridging device (3) in the form of a chute with a multiplicity of adjacent guide grooves (34). The feed conveyor turns about two or more conveyor wheels (5, 5.1). The conveyor band (6) has at least on the outside a thick layer of a highly elastic, easily deformed material, such as rubber or a plastics material similar to rubber, in which outwards-facing grooves (7) designed to hold individual vertical packages (8) are moulded, giving the belt a toothed shape. The packages are arranged in line by the conveyor band (6) and conveyed over a support table (17) which is drawn back briefly by a compressed-air-operated cylinder (24) when the conveyor band is periodically halted, thus allowing a row of packages (8) to drop into the guide grooves (34) and be deposited on the packing conveyor (2) driven to move at right angles to the feed conveyor. In this way, the packages (8) are turned gently but relatively rapidly and simply on their sides and packed.
