Magnetic crack testing of bore soffit(s) accessible from one side only - applying fluorescent powder to make defects visible under magnetisation

A magnetic field is generated in the soffit using a coil (1) transverse to the bore axis supplied with pref. a.c. and a ferromagnetic coil yoke (2). Fluorescent magnetic powder, pref. of the consistency of liquid, is applied to the regions under test. The marks in the powder corresp. to defects, esp. cracks, are made visible by illuminating with ultraviolet light. USE/ADVANTAGE - Bores in containers for steam and pressure generation. Ensures reliable magnetisation of bore soffit and defect detection.
