PURPOSE:To lower output torque without combustion deterioration of an engine by decreasingly controlling valve opening timing of an intake valve with a valve timing control system in an overload condition of the engine. CONSTITUTION:An engine (a) for a vehicle is provided with a valve timing control system (d) which controls valve opening timing of an intake valve (c). An engine output condition detection means (b) which detects an overload condition of the engine (a) is also provided. At the time of an overload condition in the engine (a), the valve timing control system (d) is actuated by an engine output torque control means (e) so as to decrease output torque of the engine (a). consequently, output torque decrease control is surely secured with the simple constitution without giving bad influence to combustion of the engine (a).
