PURPOSE:To obtain a styrene polymer having a highly syndiotactic structure by polymerizing a purified styrene monomer in the presence of a catalyst comprising an aluminoxane and a transition compound. CONSTITUTION:A purified styrene monomer of a phenylacetylene compound content <=50ppm is obtained either by optionally decreasing the water content of industrial styrene as a starting material to 5ppm or below by vacuum- deaerating it or bubbling an inert gas through it or by optionally contacting it with an organoaluminum compound (e.g. trimethylaluminum) and treating the product with at least one inorganic substance selected from among (activated) alumina, silica gel, active carbon, quick lime, aluminum silicate and diatomaceous earth at 0-50 deg.C for 10min to 2hr. This monomer is polymerized at 0-100 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst comprising an aluminoxane and a transition metal compound (e.g. cyclopentadienyltrimethyltitanium). |
