The method described is chiefly intended for pipes (16,18) enclosed in a casing (10) and leaving a space between the casing and the pipes. In this space at least a first unit (28), a transmitter is mounted for sending out a beam of e.m. radiation. At least one second unit, a receiver, some distance from the transmitter, receives the radiation e.g. and i.r. detects its absorption bands. ADVANTAGE - Leak can be detected as soon as it has started.
