992,898. Variable buoyancy buoys. ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE, and GAZ DE FRANCE. Jan. 13, 1964 [Jan. 16, 1963], No. 1484/64. Heading B7A. A variable buoyancy float includes a rigid tank 1 with a gas inlet valve 25, a water orifice 10 formed with a valve seating, a quantity of lighter than water liquid 29 filling the lower part of the tank, gas 30 filling the remainder of the tank, and a valve 20 for controlling said orifice. Normally the valve 20 sinks in the liquid 29 to close the orifice 10. When the float is immersed to a depth where the hydrostatic pressure exceeds the pressure of the gas 30, water lifts the valve 20 and enters the float, the liquid 29 rising to compress the gas. The quantity of liquid 29 is sufficient to preserve floatability of the tank when the pressure produced by the entering water has compressed the gas to a practically negligible volume. |
