In apparatus for drying or heating coal or like particulate matter, the material is discharged from a fluidized bed by overflowing it from the bed over one or more of a plurality of selectable portions, which together define substantially the full extent of the periphery of the bed. A fluidized bed a of raw coal is fed by a pipe 124 to a perforated support 1 which has imperforate sides 1<SP>1</SP> formed from suitable adjustable curved slats in order to adjust the height of selectable portions of the discharge lip 125 to allow either the coal to discharge over either a portion or substantially the whole extent of the lip. About the bed a the sides may have an annular external launder 126 to receive the discharged material, which launder may be subdivided by radial partitions 127 into compartments having individual outlets 129.
