The control system comprises a long straight element (4) sliding in a sheath (9). This element (4) interacts with a slideway mechanism (10) and (11) in which the slideway (11) is fixed to a stirrup piece (12) in engagement with the spindle of the flap mounted in the duct (2) of the chimney gathering (2) of the chimney (3). A counterweight system (8) makes it possible to balance out the weight of the moving elements of the system (long straight element (4), slide (10) and (11) and operating handle (6)) as well as the retaining force exerted on the long straight element by the push rod of a mechanism for halting in terms of translation furthermore including a leaf spring (14) acting in thrust on the push rod. The halting mechanism can be disengaged by action on the member (14) when the door for closing off the hearth of the chimney is opened, which makes it possible to release the long straight element which can be entrained by the counterweight in the direction for opening the adjustment flap. The control system is additionally provided with a device with a light display giving a visual representation of the position occupied by the flap in the duct of the chimney gathering (2). <IMAGE>
