The method and device are for monitoring the accumulation of contaminating deposits on a chain of insulators of an electrical line exposed to bad weather. The device comprises means for moving a chain of insulators between a position where it is exposed to attack from the environment and a measuring chamber (16). Means (26, 32) are provided for circulating in the chamber a current of air saturated with water vapour. An electrical circuit (44, 58, 60, 62, 64) maintains the chain of insulators at its nominal working voltage during its exposure to the contamination and makes it possible to measure the working leakage current under the said nominal working voltage. Other means (66, 67, 68) are provided for measuring the variation in the electrical conductance of the chain of insulators during the humidification and for measuring the characteristic leakage current when the conductance has reached a maximum value. <IMAGE>
