The invention relates to a device by means of which the flat top surface of a support such as a table can be increased by lowering it and reduced by raising it, characterised in that it comprises legs (4) hinged on the one hand to the underframe (3) and on the other hand underneath extensions (2) hinged to the lateral edges of a central flat top surface (1) and which when moved from one side to the other of a vertical position, by pivoting, cause a plurality of tie rods (5) hinged to the middle of the extensions (2) to move in slots (7) located on the underside of the central flat top surface (1), their purpose being to hold the device open or closed when at their limit positions, and in that there are stabilising means (6), connecting for example the legs to the underframe (3), in order to keep the complete unit stable. <IMAGE>
