The device (20) includes a housing (36) into which the portable object may be partially inserted and brought into a defined final position, a tilting contact holder (48) comprising a part (52) which carries contacts (70) designed to be connected directly to the conducting areas of the portable object and a stop (66). The insertion of the portable object causes the member to pass from a first position which it normally occupies to a second position, by acting on this stop. The contacts are then applied to the conducting areas of the portable object. A spring (62) enables the contact-holder member to be brought back automatically into its first position when the portable object is withdrawn from the housing. Applications: product dispensers, public telephones, systems for access to pay-to-enter, private or protected places, etc. <IMAGE>
