Process for the prodn. of contact surface reinforcement esp. Ni dispersion layers on cylinders of an internal combustion engine has the novelty that the side of the cylinder block with the cylinder heads is covered by a sealing plate (3). The plate is sealed against baseplates (4) in individual treatment baths whereby the baseplates have hollow projections (6) which serve as discharge pipes for the liq. in pretreatment baths, and as anodes for each cylinder borehole in treatment baths. Pref. quality of the seal between the seal plate (3) and cylinder block is tested under pressure by having a defined amt. of liq. added to the cylinder borehole and measuring the time to attain an overflow point. ADVANTAGE - Because it is not necessary to fully immerse the sealed cylinder block in the treatment bath, only a limited amt. of treatment liq. is required.
