PURPOSE:To improve the wettability of carbon fibers with a matrix binder and to enhance the fracture toughness of a carbon fiber reinforced carbonaceous composite material by previously treating the surfaces of the carbon fibers with a material similar to the binder and calcining the fibers. CONSTITUTION:A matrix binder such as a prepolymer of phenol resin, furan resin or other satisfactory thermosetting resin, tar or pitch is impregnated into or applied to carbon fibers to form prepreg. This prepreg is laminated, press-molded under heating, cured and calcined to obtain a composite material. In this method, the surfaces of the carbon fibers are previously treated by dipping the fibers in a soln. prepd. by completely dissolving a material similar to the matrix binder in an org. solvent. The soln. may be applied or sprayed on the fibers. The fibers are then calcined at >=1,200 deg.C to obtain carbon fibers each having a uniform thin graphite coat and the obtd. fibers are used as a reinforcing material. |
