METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SIMULTANEOUSLY COMMUNICATING A PLURALITY OF SIGNALS

A method and apparatus are disclosed for simultaneously transmitting a plurality of data streams or signals over a single transmission line. A digital data stream of relatively high frequency data such as that transmitted in a Local Area Network (LAN) is amplitude modulated by a relatively low frequency signal. The low frequency signal may be completely independent of the high frequency data stream. The variation in amplitude may be either analog or digital. In a particularly useful embodiment, optical transmitters (12) and receivers (14) are employed.
