An encoding sensor system produces 2 pulses which represent an incremental change in a measured value, whose phase relationship represents the direction of change and, in sum, give the absolute value. A further circuit produces a single light pulse whose width represents the direction of change and sends it via an optical fibre to a distant receiver which feeds it to the up and down input of a counter.
