In machine tools, in particular turning machines, the workpiece being machined is held in a holder. To ensure safe operation, a certain minimum gripping force must be maintained. If this force is too small, the workpiece can be thrown out of its holder, which represents a considerable accident hazard. It should also be noted that the workpiece-gripping force decreases as the friction surfaces of the chuck become progressively less well lubricated and progressively dirtier. The invention therefore proposes that the chuck jaws act to produce a gripping force, the hydraulic energy producing this force is monitored and, when a given energy threshold is exceeded, a signal is triggered.
