Layers of transparent dielectric material having immobilised thereon haptens or hapten analogues are useful in devices for the immonassay of haptens which are based on the principle of frustrated total reflection. The layer of transparent dielectric material forms part of a biosensor comprising a) a cavity layer of transparent dielectric material having immobilised upon it a hapten or hapten analogue, b) a dielectric substrate, and c) interposed between the cavity layer and the substrate, a dielectric spacer layer, the arrangement being such that, when the interface between the substrate and the spacer layer is irradiated with light such that total reflection occurs, the total reflection may be frustrated by the propagation of a resonant guided mode within the cavity layer. |
