The prodn. of aromatic hydrocarbons from >=6C unsatd. hydrocarbons is carried out using a catalyst comprising Ga or a Ga cpd. on a support. The catalyst are capable of dehydrogenating 3-8C alkanes to 3-8C monoolefins, dimerising the latter, and aromatising the resulting 6-18C olefins, all in the same process step (or in separate steps). Aromatisation is pref. effected at 400-750 degrees C and 1-20 atm. Combined dehydrogenation, dimerisation and aromatisation can be effected at 400-700 degrees C and 1-20 atm. Suitable catalyst can be prepd. by impregnating alumina or silica with Ga(NO3) and calcining the product to form Ga2O3, or by subjecting hydrated alumina or silica to ion exchange with Ga ions. The support can be modified by ion exchange with Al,Fe or Ni. The Ga content of the catalyst should be 0.01-10 (esp. 0.1-6) wt %. |
