The binder containing cement, alpha -calcium sulphate hemihydrate and further additives consists of 40 to 60 parts by weight of alpha -hemihydrate, 40 to 60 parts by weight of low-alumina cement, 3 to 10% by weight, preferably 5 to 8% by weight, of finely dispersed silica and, if desired, up to 2% by weight of plasticiser, retarder and/or accelerator. The binder can be widely used, since it sets independently of the temperature, has processing times adjustable within wide ranges, sets without shrinkage and shows a steep rise in strength, coupled with high final strength and water resistance of the products.
