Fertilizers are prepared by treatment of a carbohydrate-containing material in discrete, particulate form, e.g. rice hulls, Bermuda grass hay, clover husk, cottonseed hulls, peanut hulls, wheat straw, with a nitrogen-containing compound in gaseous form, e.g. gaseous ammonia or volatilized methylamine, dimethylamine, trimethylamine, formamide, acetamide, propionamide or butyramide. Nitrogen so combined with the material may be "fixed," e.g. by treatment with monocalcium phosphate. Silica from skeletal tissue in the initial material may be sieved out of the product. |
