The apparatus for the detection of objects comprises ultrasonic sensors consisting of two transducers (3) embedded in a block (2) of flexible absorbent material forming the body of the sensor. One of the two transducers is the transmitter (32) and the other is the receiver (31). Their axes A1 and A2 are parallel and each of the said transducers is housed in a conical insert (4) made of a high density material fixed into the said block (2) of material and whose angle alpha lies between 45 and 90 DEG . The outer diameter (6) lies at least in the plane of the external face (5) of the transducer (3). Several of the said sensors (1) may be combined on the same support so as to form a belt around it and ensure optimum coverage for surveillance. <IMAGE>
