Androstherenedione is a base product for corticosteroid preparation in pharmaceutical chemistry. The strain Mycobacterium sp. (registered with the NBPMCC under No. 1572) is resistant to antibiotics and is capable of selectively transforming sterols into androstherenedione and is obtained by exposing a bacterial suspension in a sterile nutrient medium of the strain Mycobacterium sp. NRRLB-3805.to ultraviolet and X-ray irradiation.
