PURPOSE:To obtain the liquid crystal display element having a high display grade by laminating a monomolecular film obtd. by developing an amphiphatic high-polymer material having a specific repeating unit on a water surface on a substrate formed with an electrode layer, then subjecting the film to such a heat treatment as to induce a ring closing reaction, thereby forming an oriented film. CONSTITUTION:Patterns 2 of the transparent electrodes and an insulating film 3 are formed on the surface of the substrate 1 and the liquid crystal oriented film 4 is formed on the surface thereof. Two sheets of the substrates formed in such a manner are spaced by a spacer 5 and are adhered. A liquid crystal display material is injected from an injection port 6 into the spacing, by which the liquid crystal layer 7 is formed. The ampliphatic high-polymer material used for producing the monomolecular films has the repeating unit of formula I, where R<1> to impart a hydrophobic property is so determined as to exit as the ester of carboxylic acid in the para position. In the formula I, all of R<1> are 12 to 30C monovalent aliphat. groups. The liquid crystal oriented film which is uniform, has less defects and has the good orientability is obtd. in this way and therefore, the liquid crystal display element having the high display grade is obtd. |
