The invention provides dyes having the general formula <FORM:1009794/C4-C5/1> in which a and b are 0 or 1 and a + b equals 1 or 2, F is an anthraquinone residue containing sulphonic acid groups or a phthalocyanine residue linked by a sulphonyl group, n is 1 or 2, the diphenyl-sulphone residue may contain other substituents as well as the sulphonic acid group, the term "acyl" represents the residue of a reactive acylating agent which is an anhydride or halide of a carboxylic acid or a chlorine containing azine or azinone derivative having at least 2 chlorine atmospheres. The dyes are obtained by acylation of compounds of formula <FORM:1009794/C4-C5/2> in molar ratio 1 : n with acylating agents which contain the reactive group as above. The acylation is generally carried out at temperatures between - 10 DEG and +30 DEG C. with cooling, the liberated mineral acid being neutralized with alkali agents, additions of organic solvents, e.g. benzene, toluene or dimethyl sulphonide may also be employed. The products are salted out with sodium or potassium chloride. The acylating agents include b -chloro and bromo-propionyl chloride, and the following propionyl chloride derivatives, b -phenylsulphonyl, b -methylsulphonyl, b -ethylsulphonyl, and b -phenoxy, also b -chloroacrylolyl chloride, acrylolyl chloride, b -chlorocrotonyl chloride, chlorazine, chloro-azole, trichloro, 1,3,5- or 1,2,4-triazines especially cyanuric chloride, dichloro triazines and trichloro pyridazines, pyrimidines and pyrazines, tetrachloropyridazines, pyrimidines, pyrazines and dichloro pyridazones. If the heterocyclic acyl radical introduced has more than one halogen atom then further reactions may be carried out with compounds containing hydroxyl, amino, mercapto, and thiocyanato groups provided at least one reactive chlorine remains. The diphenylsulphone radical may contain other groups as well as the sulphonic acid group. The starting materials of Formula II may be prepared, for example, by reaction of 1-amino-4-bromoanthraquinone-2-sulphonic acid or -2,5, -2,6, -2,7, -2,8 disulphonic acids with diamino-diphenylsulphone-sulphonic acids.
