1,009,616. Treating polyolefine fibres; films etc. MONTECATINI SOC. GENERALE PER L'INDUSTRIA MINERARIA E CHIMICA. May 21, 1963 [May 24, 1962], No. 20230/63. Heading B5B. Fibres, films etc. which have been produced by the melt extrusion of mixtures of isotactic polyolefines with basic organic nitrogen containing polycondensate are immersed for 2 seconds to 24 hours at a temperature between room temperature and the boiling point of the solvent in a solution containing polyvinyl alcohol and an aldehyde. The polyolefine may be polyethylene, polypropylene (preferred), polybutene-1, polypentene-1, poly-4-methylpentene-1 or polystyrene. The polycondensate may be a polycondensate of epichlorhydrin with an amine, of diglycidylamine with an amine or diamine, of a dihalogen derivative of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon with a bis - secondary diamine, polyvinylpyridine, or a polyalkylenimine. The treatment with the solution may be carried out before or after stretching the fibres etc. The aldehyde used may be formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, acrylaldehyde or butyraldehyde. The fibres etc. may subsequently be treated with dilute aqueous sulphuric acid. The treating solution is preferably aqueous, its polyvinyl alcohol content may be 0À1 to 10% and its aldehyde content may be 0À2 to 20%. Fibres obtained by the process of the invention are receptive to acid, metallized and dispersed dyes and have an affinity for basic and vat dyes. Specifications 950,852 and 992,011 are referred to.
