PURPOSE:To increase the performance and life of a battery by containing inorganic particles within the porous catalyst layer of a gas diffusion electrode. CONSTITUTION:Potassium titanate fibers serving as inorganic fine particles, a hydrophobic binder, and water are added to carbon black to which platinum is added as a catalyst, and they are mixed to form a catalyst layer 5a. Nickel plating or the like is conducted on one side of the layer 5a and pressed against the layer 5a with a roller to form a metal screen 7a, and a gas diffusion electrode A is obtained. The electrode A is used as a hydrogen electrode and faced with a positive electrode through a separator 3a to assemble a sealed nickel- hydrogen secondary battery. The inorganic fine particles increase electrolyte retainability in the layer 5 and transfer of an electrolyte is made smooth. The performance and life of the battery are increased. |
