PURPOSE: To use a densitometer also when using a pigmentation liquid ink containing a pigment that transmits infrared rays by projecting rays within a visible spectrum range onto a surface part where a liquid developer is deposited through a collimator lens. CONSTITUTION: An LED 102 that is a light source projects rays within a visible spectrum range to one portion of a surface where a liquid developer is deposited through a collimator lens 116. Light reflected from one portion of the surface where the liquid developer is deposited is applied to a focusing lens 114. A photodiode array 106 is arranged so that it receives rays through the focusing lens 114 and generates a total signal that is proportional to the total reflection factor of one portion of the surface where the liquid developer is deposited and a diffusion signal that is proportional to the diffusion part. Then, a control circuit network that is connected to the photodiode array 106 compares the total signal with the diffusion signal, obtains the difference, and generates a regular reflection signal that is proportional to the regular reflection component of the total reflection factor on one portion of the surface where the liquid developer is deposited.
