PRODUCTION OF LIQUID CRYSTAL/RESIN COMPOSITE AND LIQUID CRYSTAL OPTICAL ELEMENT USING THIS COMPOSITE

PURPOSE:To uniformly disperse and hold a liquid crystal in a resin matrix by determining the volumetric fraction of the liquid crystal in dissolved matter so as to have specific relations. CONSTITUTION:The volumetric fraction of the liquid crystal in the dissolved matter is so determined as to have the relation of equation I with the volumetric fraction of the liquid crystal at the critical point in the phase diagram of the dissolved matter and the relation of equation II with the temp. ( deg.C) at which the dissolved matter generates turbidity from the dissolved state. The phase sepn. of the liquid crystal and an uncured photosetting resin from the compatible state to a component contg. much of the liquid crystal and a component contg. substantially no liquid crystal and the precipitation of the liquid crystal from a uniform soln. progress simultaneously in this way. The liquid crystal/resin composite which has a uniform grain size and is uniformly dispersed with the liquid crystal grains in the resin matrix is thus obtd.
