摘要 <p>A controlled suspension for a wheeled vehicle includes a damper 20 between the vehicle body 10 and wheel 11, the damper 20 being switchable, at a frequency at least twice the resonant wheel vibration frequency, between a first mode of operation producing a high damping force and a second mode of operation having a low damping force. A controller 15 repeatedly derives from vehicle operating variables an actuator force to be applied between the body 10 and wheel 11 in order to produce a desired suspension behaviour, determines whether that force would result in active or dissipative suspension power. The controller 15 further stores a threshold actuator valve and controls the damper 20 for each derivation so that (1) the damper 20 operates in its second mode of operation when the actuator force would produce active lower, (2) the damper 20 operates in its first mode of operation when the actuator force exceeds the threshold and would produce dissipative power, and (3) the damper 20 operates in its second mode of operation when the actuator force is less than the threshold and would produce dissipative power. The controller can also be used with active suspensions.</p>
