PURPOSE:To eliminate contradictions between inferred causes and results by discriminating whether events of conditions stored in cause candidate conditions are traced or not to determine cause candidates. CONSTITUTION:At the time of knowledge input, a knowledge editor 1 is used to input and edit the knowledge of experts, and it is stored in a knowledge base 2 through a knowledge base managing part 3. At the time of inference, trouble phenomena, circumstances, and questions for use conditions or the like are given from a question answer part 4 through a diagnostic interface 5. When receiving information to questions from a user, an inference part 6 uses the knowledge of experts stored in the knowledge base 2 and information obtained from the user to infer trouble causes and narrows down trouble cause candidates. Inference results are outputted to the interface and are displayed on a diagnostic picture or the like to terminate the diagnosis.
