CUTTING CARTON BLANKS AND CUTTERS THEREFOR

Apparatus and method for cutting an end portion of a carton blank, e.g. to form a stitch flap, employs a rotatably driven male cutting head (76) cooperating with a rotatably driven female cutting head (108). The female cutting head (108) has a peripheral cutting groove (114) therein and an anvil surface (120) adjacent one side of the groove. The male cutting head (76) has a two edged slot cutting blade (68) of predetermined arcuate length (86) which enters the groove (114) each revolution, and a knife (74) which extends transversely away from the blade (86) and engages the anvil surface (120) each revolution. The blade (86) has a scallop-like cut-out (72) in the side adjacent the anvil surface (120). The cut-out (72) modifies the blade to a single edged cutting blade for a small part (98) of its length. Scrap portions produced from the carton blank by a slotting cut of the blade (68) and a transverse cut of the knife (74) are integrally connected together by a bridging piece (140) enabled by this cut-out.
