A silver halide photographic material comprising a compound represented by the general formula (I) or (II) or a salt thereof: <CHEM> wherein Z1 represents a nonmetallic atom group required to form an unsaturated ring; Y1 represents an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom or <CHEM> in which R11 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an aryl group, an acyl group, an allyl group, an alkanesulfonyl group or an arylenesulfonyl group; R1 represents an alkyl group, an acyl group, an alkanesulfonyl group or an arylenesulfonyl group; and X1 represents an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom; <CHEM> wherein Z2 represents a nonmetallic atom group required to form an unsaturated ring; Y2 represents an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom or <CHEM> in which R12 has the same meaning as R11; R2 represents an alkyl group; X2 represents an oxygen atom, a methylene group or <CHEM> in which R22 has the same meaning as R11; or a compound represented by the general formula (III): <CHEM> wherein Z represents a nonmetallic atom group required to form an unsaturated ring; and R represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an aryl group, an acyl group, an allyl group, an alkanesulfonyl group or an arylenesulfonyl group; a processing solution for silver halide photographic material comprising an aqueous solution containing a compound represented by the general formula (I) or (II) or a salt thereof or a compound represented by the general formula (III); and a method for the processing of a silver halide photographic material, which comprises processing a silver halide photographic material in the presence of a compound represented by the general formula (I) or (II) or a salt thereof or a compound represented by the general formula (III).
