A rotary-driven ring holding plate (2) accepts the sealing ring (1) to be tested. The ring is rotated about an axis extending vertically to the plane of the ring and passing its centre point. A rotatably mounted deflection wheel (4) is applied to the spring strap (5) of the sealing lip (6) in the region of the fixed test position (3). A fissure can be detected through charge of reflection of the groove surface by a reflex light barrier. An opto-electronic sensor converts the reflected component of the laser beam directed onto the spine into a proportional electrical signal. ADVANTAGE - Fully automatic process, including separation of faulty sealing rings.
