The coal mining machine (1) operates along a roadway and is followed by a support machine (2). It cuts the coal in several places and a smaller winning machine removes the coal from the intervening spaces. The coal is transported away from the face by a conveyor (9). The coal cutting machine has a swinging arm (12) which may extend telescopically. A rotary coal cutter (14) is mounted on the end of the arm. The arm may be manipulated to cut an approx. constant thickness of coal off the face from the top to the bottom. USE/ADVANTAGE - Coal face cutting machine makes better use of the conveyor capacity.
