Combined chemical-biological treatment of contaminated waste - has washing reaction operating intermittently

Washing liq from which solids are sepd after treating biologically and/or chemically contaminated material contains a chemical component which can be biologically broken down, and a biological component with heterotrophic micro-organisms whose nutriment consists of the chemical contaminant, with the chemical component of the washing liq providing carbon and energy. Washing therefore initiates a decontamination reaction with contaminants transferred to the washing liq for breaking down by microorganisms. Since mechanical sepn of liq from solids as in P3938464 is sometimes incomplete, the washing and reaction process is now operated discontinuously with pre-determined action periods. In suitable appts a pivotable container has a perforated floor between the washing space, with its lateral discharge outlet, and a lower reception space. Mechanical rakes remove treated solids from the washing space, which holds sprayers for rinsing and other water supplies, together with vacuum filter-candles.
