The invention concerns a process for preparing aromatic amines of the formula <IMAGE> where A is a bridge member, Z is a radical of the formula-CH2-CH2-OH, -CH=CH2 or -CH2-CH2-Y, and Y is a group that is detachable under alkaline conditions, and the benzene nucleus I can be further substituted, which is characterised in that compounds of the formula <IMAGE> where A, Z and I are each as defined under the formula (1), are hydrogenated at a pressure of from 0.1 to 100 bar in the presence of a lower aliphatic or aromatic mono- or dicarboxylic acid and in the presence of a nickel catalyst. The compounds obtained by the process according to the invention are suitable for use as intermediates for preparing reactive dyes. |
