PURPOSE: To produce a catalyst having high selectivity and high activity by applying cobalt nitrate on a porous inactive carrier and calcining it/in an atmosphere containing nitrogen oxide at a fixed concentration or above. CONSTITUTION: As the catalyst or a precursor to the catalyst at the time of preparing a hydrocarbon from a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, the porous inactive carrier such as silica, alumina, on which a cobalt compound is applied, is used. In such a case, as the cobalt compound, cobalt nitrate is used. The carrier provided with the cobalt compound is calcined in the atmosphere containing nitrogen oxide having >=20 vol.%, preferably 40-95 vol.% and more preferably 60-90 vol.% concentration without considering moisture content. As a result, the catalyst having high sensitivity and high activity is obtained. |
