In a device for assessing bits of timber in equalizing works, sorting works or the like, a one-piece feeder 2 is arranged to supply bits of timber one by one to the conveyor mechanism. The working of both the one-piece feeder and the conveyor mechanism 7 is activated when the assessor feeds the assessment result into a recording apparatus such that the assessor himself can decide the necessary assessment time for each bit of timber. The conveyor mechanism 7 delivers bits of timber to a one- piece feeder 33 situated downstream. Both this one-piece feeder, and a conveyor receiving the bits of timber therefrom, and a conveyor apparatus supplying bits of timber to the one-piece feeder 2 situated upstream are arranged to be driven at essentially one and the same timber-advancement rate.
