Process for the manufacture of a carbon black which comprises: a primary combustion stage for introducing the combustion air and a primary fuel oil into a combustion zone of large diameter to form a combustion gas stream; a secondary combustion stage for making a combustion gas stream formed in the primary combustion stage flow into a combustion zone in the form of a narrow constriction in order thus to accelerate the combustion gas stream to a linear velocity of at least 100 m/s and the introduction of a secondary fuel oil in the direction of the axis of the reactor and/or in the direction normal to the axis to complete the combustion; a reaction stage for conveying a complete combustion gas stream formed in the secondary combustion stage into a reaction zone of small diameter and the injection of a feedstock atomised by an oxidising gas from the periphery of the complete combustion gas stream to produce a carbon black; and a reaction completion stage to make a gas stream containing carbon black formed in the reaction stage flow into a posterior reaction zone of large diameter to cool the gas stream abruptly, thus completing the reaction.
