2071902 9106386 PCTABS00005 A process is described for producing castings comprising the steps of introducing a charge of molten metal, e.g. aluminum into a mould, cooling the molten metal in the mould until the outer layer of the metal solidifies and contracts leaving a gap between the surface of the casting and the surface of the mould, injecting into the gap a gas having a different thermal conductivity than air whereby the rate of further cooling of the casting can be controlled, continuing the cooling of the casting and removing the casting from the mould.
