In a process for removing oily impurities from water, a substance which reacts with the impurities is added to the water and after a certain reaction time the product obtained is collected and removed. The process is characterized in that ground rubber having a particle size less than 5 mm, preferably between 0.5 and 2 mm, is used for this purpose and left in contact with the polluted water for at least 5 minutes. The quantity of ground rubber used is advantageously approximately equal to the quantity of oil to be removed. The ground rubber can also be surrounded by a reticular sheath which does not affect the uptake of the oil but makes the ground material easier to handle. To this end, the device for implementing the process consists of a sack (5) with an aperture width not greater than 0.5 mm, in particular a jute sack (18), which contains a quantity of ground rubber having an average particle size of 0.5-5 mm equal to not more than 50 % of the theoretical capacity of the sack. |
