<p>A ''soft excavator'' utilizes supersonic jets of air to loosen and remove soil and the like without damage to utility lines and other ''hard'' buried objects. A pair of digger nozzles (7, 89), each mounted at an angle Υ to the axis (34) of a tubular support shaft (32) which in turn is mounted for planetary motion on a drivehead (19) rotating about a tubular member (4), trace an epitrochoidal path around the inlet to the tubular member which advances with each rotation of the drivehead (19) to uniformly loosen soil across the cutting face and to gather the loosened soil toward the tubular member (4). Injector nozzles (80) direct supersonic jets of air into the tubular member (4) in the direction of the discharge end to generate a secondary air flow which sucks loosened soil aerated by the digger nozzles (7, 89) into the inlet end (6) of the tubular member (4). The entrained soil is decelerated by a diffuser (11) and flexible bag (13) at the discharge end (12) of the tubular member (4) and deposited in a pile (14).</p> |
