PURPOSE:To enhance magnetic Kerr rotation angle of the material for any wavelength and to use this material for a magneto-optical recording medium having excellent reproduction characteristics by alternately depositing metal or semiconductor thin films having absorption edges and dielectric thin films to constitute a base layer and then forming a magnetic material layer thereon. CONSTITUTION:The base layer 2 comprising alternately deposited layers of metal or semiconductor thin films 3 having absorption edges and dielectric thin films 4 is formed on a substrate 1, and the magnetic material layer 5 is formed on the base layer 2. Namely, by depositing the metal or semiconductor thin films 3 having absorption edges and the dielectric thin films 4 alternately with properly controlled thickness, the base layer 2 has properly controlled absorption edges and the magnetic material layer is formed on the base layer having absorption edges for any wavelength. Thereby, the magnetic Kerr rotation angle of the magnetic material layer can be enhanced for wavelength near the absorption edges and the obtd. magnetic Kerr effect material is effective for a recording medium with high magneto-optical effect. |
