An assembly of planar circuit units comprises a pair of insulating plates on one face of each of which metal is deposited in a pattern forming wiring or a circuit element, the plates being held together and spaced by a layer of insulating material. One or more discrete components electrically connected to the deposited metal may be held in position between the plates. As shown, Fig. 1, two parallel glass plates 1, having deposited circuitry 2 and leads 3 on facing surfaces, are bonded together by a thin layer 5, Fig. 2, of cured thermosetting epoxy resin. Transistors 4, or similar components such as diodes, inductors and capacitors, have their leads soldered or bonded by thermo-compression to circuitry 2, and are embedded in the resin layer 5. Fig. 3 (not shown) depicts a jig 6 comprising similar top and bottom members 7, 9 and a spacer member 8. Top member 7 comprises a well 10 to accommodate a glass plate and grooves 13 to receive protruding leads 3. Spacer member 8 has a cut-out 12 and members 7, 8 have holes 14, 15 which engage pegs on member 9. The jig is clamped from the outside and epoxy resin is poured into the jig and heat-cured. A thin layer of low melting point glass may be pressed on to circuitry 2 before encapsulation. More than two insulating plates may be similarly assembled, in which case intermediate plates may have deposited circuitry on both sides. |
