Ethylene is separated from gaseous mixtures by reacting with hydrogen fluoride, separating the ethyl fluoride formed and decomposing it into ethylene which is recovered and hydrogen fluoride which is recycled. Reaction with hydrogen fluoride is effected at - 30 DEG to 150 DEG C. and 0-30 kg./cm.2g. by mixing with an amount of gaseous or liquid hydrogen fluoride equimolar with the ethylene and reacting in a vessel containing liquid hydrogen fluoride; a metal fluoride catalyst may be present. Ethyl fluoride and hydrogen fluoride are separated from the gas by condensation and each other by distillation. Decomposition is effected at 150-800 DEG C. and subatmospheric pressure to 20 kg./cm.2g., a metal fluoride, e.g. aluminium or iron fluoride may be present as catalyst.
