A mail handling system (10, 510) is disclosed wherein the entire lot or batch of mail pieces is loaded into or taken from a bin (32) for processing. Each mail piece (21, 23, 25) is individually removed or added by an operator while the computer (12) monitors the weight of the bin (32) and simultaneously produces serial numbers for affixing to each mail piece (21). In an alternative embodiment a postage meter provides postage imprinting and labelling for each mail piece (21) removed or added. By monitoring the weight of bin (32) before and after removal or the addition of each mail piece (21), the mail piece weight is determined. The weight of each mail piece (21) is required in order to determine the postage cost for each mail piece (21) and to produce an optional postal service form complying with manifest mailing requirements. |
